What is Prior Authorization?

Prior authorization is a feature of your prescription benefit plan that ensures the proper use of selected prescription drugs. As new medications are developed, it is important to make sure seniors with dementia who have accompanying conditions are getting the medications they need. Physicians are prescribing medications which they know to be less effective, or ineffective, than other medications at slowing the progression of the patient’s dementia.  Some prescription plans will require the patient to try another drug first and fail on it, while other plans will allow the physician to make a case for why patients should get the needed medications. It is important for seniors with dementia who have a Part D plans to look at what medications they are taking and compare that with the preferred drug list for the plan they are selecting.
