Representatives from 30 community-based organizations that provide resources, information and services are ready to discuss your concerns.

WORKSHOPS
All workshops are 40 minutes and begin at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15am.
The workshops are listed below.
1. Understanding Medicaid and Medicare
Did you know that Open Enrollment for Medicare Parts C and D has begun and ends on December 7? What does the landscape of plans look like for next year? What impact will the Affordable Care Act have on those reaching the prescription drug coverage gap? Does it make sense to delay enrolling in Part D if someone has no prescriptions? Does Medicare cover the shingles vaccine? How do people know if they've entered the prescription drug coverage gap? Donna Bryant, Medicare/Medicaid expert for the State Board on Aging and Long-Term care, will help you understand what you need to know about these two often complicated subjects and answer any questions you have.

2. How to Advocate for Your Loved One Living in a Nursing Home.
Do you have a friend or loved one in a nursing home that you feel isn’t getting the care or attention they deserve? Julia Pierstorff, Coordinator Volunteer Ombudsman Program State of Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long-Term Care, will share with you ways to advocate for the rights as nursing home residents and to make certain they are upheld.

3. The Tools of Problem Solving
Caregiving is a continual exercise in solving problems. How do you it in a way that is respectful for everyone’s needs? Find out how and learn that problem solving also includes making time for you every day because can’t be an effective caregiver if you don’t take care of you. We’ll show you how to make a doable plan that gives you the necessary time for yourself every day. Presented by Ethel Dunn, MS. Edu., who coordinates and manages the Rainbow Project, Inc. program, Relatives Raising their Relative's Children. She also teaches two six-week courses, Living Well with Chronic Conditions and Powerful Tools for Caregivers.

4. What to do When Someone Falls and Other Home Safety Issues—a hands-on clinic
Learn how to safely lift, position and move an injured or frail adult. Other home safety issues will be discussed. Presented by Jean Mueller, Catholic Charities, who has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and has cared for individuals in clinical settings as well as home care. Her own family caregiving experience allows her to relate to others and offer common sense, practical advice.

5. A Caregiver Class Sampler
Caregivers discuss how two caregiver classes—“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” and “Practical Skills for Caregivers”— can make your life as a caregiver much easier. Presented by Siv Goulding, a caregiver advocate and teacher of “Power Tools for Caregivers.”

SPECIAL ONGOING SESSIONS:
1. Share the Care—A detailed step-by-step model (that’s described in the book by the same name) that shows how to organize a group to care for someone with a need – whether it be a long-term chronic illness like Parkinson’s or MS, for someone in rehabilitation, or at the end-of-life, a Share The Care groups provide all the help one needs for the long term. Claire Culbertson, National Family Caregiver Special Project’s Coordinator for the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources, works with Wisconsin counties to set up Share the Care stations – a place where family and friends can learn about how to start a group. Claire and Mary Reines (retired clinical social worker specializing in dementia care)—both part of the Madison area Share The Care Station—will be available in the Exhibitor Room to discuss Share The Care with interested participants

2. All Things Legal—Advance directives, living wills, powers of attorney, DNR (do not resuscitate), trusts, estates…and so on. The legal aspects of aging and dying can be daunting and complex. Julie Short, an expert elder law attorney, will be happy to answer any questions about your legal issues.

HAVE FUN -- PLAY CAREGIVER JEOPARDY
Two 20-minute sessions, at 10:00 and 11:00am.
After you’ve visited the exhibitor room and/or taken a workshop, test what you learned by playing Caregiver Jeopardy. All the categories and questions will pertain to information about the organizations in the Exhibitor room. Every person answering a question correctly wins a Culver’s custard cone. You can participate in only one Jeopardy session.

HOW-TO PRE-REGISTER: Call NESCO at 243-5252 by Friday, Nov. 2 and receive a bonus raffle ticket.
ARE YOU A CAREGIVER NEEDING RESPITE TO ATTEND THE EVENT?
We will arrange respite free of charge. Please call us in advance at 243-5252 so we can organize it. We will also provide on-site respite. Again, please give us advance notice by calling 243-5252.
HOW THE RAFFLES WORK: After you’ve visited the Exhibitor Room and completed any workshop, the workshop leader will give you a ticket to fill out with your name and contact information. Place the ticket into the can as you leave. All drawings will take place at the end of the Fair at noon. You do not have to be present to win. All winners will be contacted.
